Most children's garden tools suit ages 3 and upward. Younger children enjoy trowels and small rakes with close supervision. By age 5 or 6, children can manage a full set confidently. Always check the handle length; a tool that reaches roughly waist height on the child gives proper leverage without strain.

Once or twice a season, rub linseed oil into the wooden handles with a cloth and let it soak in overnight. This prevents drying and cracking and keeps the wood looking good for years.

A trowel, a hand fork and a small rake cover almost everything a beginner needs. Add a watering can if there is a bed or pots to tend. Good wooden tools absolutely can be handed down.
